The brilliant new Continental GT Speed Convertible was unveiled in Detroit earlier this year, to universal acclaim.
The motoring industry’s toughest audience was able to get behind the wheel in a series of media driving events – and the world’s fastest four-seat convertible has not disappointed.
Autocar’s Andrew Frankel heaped praise on Bentley’s latest addition to the Continental marque, describing the GT Speed Convertible as “a rarity: a car that is better in practice than in theory because it works in all seasons for most reasons”.
Across six glossy pages, the journalist recounts a Californian adventure that put the car through its paces on snowy mountain roads and into Furnace Creek, the hottest place on earth.
And the GT Speed Convertible delivered on all its promises: “when I slide into the deep sculpted chair, look around what remains one of the best-looking, best-finished interiors of any car at any price and hear the far-off thunder of those dozen pistons shuttling impatiently up and down their bores, I feel a wave of anticipation . . . I’m excited about this, and I damn well should be.”
Ken Gibson, in Sun Motors, added: “I could happily spend the rest of my driving days sitting in the glorious luxury of the Bentley, because this is British craftsmanship in wood and leather that no one can equal.
“Floor the accelerator pedal and you are propelled forward in a wave of power. Forget about 0-60mph times – the GT Speed hits 100mph in just 9.7 seconds and continues relentlessly until you join the 200mph club.”
Meanwhile, Daily Telegraph motoring writer Chris Knapman reports the Bentley “chomped miles as effectively as the eagles flying overhead devour their prey, and when the need arose, always answered the call for a bit more speed, a lunge of overtaking thrust.
“With an epic, two-day, 1,000-mile road trip to undertake . . . it’s hard to think of a vehicle as capable as a Bentley convertible. Sure, a classic or a muscle car would be fun, but they wouldn’t have Bentley’s excellent ride or massaging seats, and with the roof down you couldn’t hear yourself think, let alone talk to your passenger in hushed tones.”
