If there is one man who can appreciate the qualities of Bentley’s dynamic Continental GT V8 it’s Le Mans 24 Hour race winner Guy Smith.
And when the 37-year-old Yorkshire driver got behind the wheel of one of the new models at Silverstone he was blown away by its power and its handling.
“The power and the steering are really responsive. I could flick the car from left to right and put it exactly where I wanted it,” he said.
“And the sound of the car is fantastic.”
Guy said he was particularly impressed by the basic handling of the car.
“The slightly stiffer suspension and the more direct, more positive power steering were really noticeable.
“And they have done a fabulous job on the gearbox. It’s smooth, effortless shifting and, just like a race car, it won’t let you change down until the car is at exactly the right speed.
“In fact as far as the gearbox is concerned it’s the closest I have ever seen to a race car on a car designed for the road.”
Guy, who started his racing career at the age of 12, was also thrilled by the trademark Continental V8 engine sound.
“Bentley have also done a great job developing just the right engine note and remarkable work creating an engine for this car that has cut fuel consumption and emissions so drastically – and they have done it in style.”
During his time in the Continental V8 at Silverstone, Guy certainly put the car through its paces, trying out to the full the raw power of the 500bhp powerplant on the straights and pushing it hard on every bend.
And as for his overall impression at the end of day? Well the smile on his face when he finally came off the circuit told the story better than any words could.
