A work of art. Sculptured poetry in motion. The contemporary and charismatic new Bentley Continental GTC is the latest expression of the marque’s relentless pursuit of perfection.
To explore its many facets, Bentley has commissioned six emerging British artists to ‘look behind the surface’ of the iconic new model.
The result is a stunning series of thought-provoking art works.
Chris Woods, Marketing Strategy Manager for Bentley, says: “We challenged the artists to come up with designs that evoked key characteristics of the new Continental GTC, as well as reflecting the core values of Bentley.” ‘
Exhilarating’, by London-based illustrator Tim Marrs, uses an eclectic collage of mixed media in a symphony of azure tones.
Tim says: “Outdoor elements capture the exhilarating open-top Bentley driving experience. Wind and air flow through, becoming sea and water, combining images that demonstrate this dynamic.” Tim’s design puts the new Bentley Continental GTC right at the centre of the action, surrounded by images of speedboats, aeroplanes and rollercoasters to stir up memories of driving through Monaco.
Spiral Studio – alter ego of artist Darren Hopes – creates painterly graphic images using digitally manipulated photography. This modern technique is employed in ‘Sensuous’, which focuses on hands.
The image features a pair of caressing hands, decorated in warm, rich tones that invoke an intense feeling of sumptuous luxury, reflecting the aesthetic charm of the high quality natural materials and craftsmanship selected to enhance the interior of the Bentley.
In contrast, ‘Dynamic’, draws on Jimi Crayon’s graffiti artist background to present an urban influenced mixed media graphic.
“I was inspired by the untapped potential of the GTC, and wanted to portray it in a dynamic, contemporary way that is full of fun and energy,” says Jimi. “The variety of media creates a striking and powerful mix of fast brush strokes and sharp clean detail.”
Jimi’s design reveals the playful side of Bentley, refreshing and unexpected, but with a knowing, sophisticated edge.
Lesley Buckingham’s enchanting classic watercolour design evokes the ‘exquisite’ characteristic of the Bentley Continental.
Her painting reflects the traditional values that underpin the Bentley brand.
“The English hart is a timeless symbol of British pace and beauty, while the soft carpet of flowers, ferns and feathers denote the exquisite comfort of the new GTC.
Lesley, renowned for her fairytale images, continues: “An oversized butterfly settles on the back of the creature, depicting the sheer bliss of the car’s interior.”
Paul Wearing draws on his extensive design background, using graphic digital media to create a strong, bold image to illustrate the ‘distinctive’ Bentley.
He says: “The distinctive contemporary styling immediately conjured up a brisk abstract image. While the bold British block colours echo the sculptured and dynamic design, flashing, fast moving, repetitious shapes and angles express speed and performance.
” Finally, Primrose Hill-based painter David Holmes presents a delicate, soft watercolour to denote the ‘inspiration’ evoked by the new Continental GTC. The painting deftly combines the dreamlike beauty of the Bentley, with the confidence of brush-stroke that is a pre-requisite for the water-colourist and the car designer.
“The challenge was to produce an image that encapsulates both the inspirational Bentley design and the emotional impact of the open-top driving experience,” he says.
“So I juggled with reality to create a floating other-worldly touch of ethereal magic.”
Francis Ellison, Bentley engineering project leader, adds: “We have infused the new GTC with everything it needs to get the adrenaline pumping and confidently handle whatever the four seasons bring.
“It simply delivers the ultimate open-topped driving experience – with no compromises.
